Have a half written post on Marie Antoinette and Sofia Coppola in general, waiting to be finished, but right now it seems like too much effort, so instead I updated the box in honour of the future post. I’ve put up Gang of Four’s ‘Natural’s not in it’ (I’m pretty sure that was the opening song of Marie Antoinette- correct me if I’m wrong?). While we’re at it, I suggest you also listen to Rare Earth’s ‘I just want to celebrate’, it will put you in a good mood, trust.
Also, just a quick note: I recently read Steph’s post on lame bloggy infighting, and I’ve got to say, WTF? I still cannot understand why people spend so much time arguing in forums and blogs in a manner that cannot be classed as friendly, amusing, ironic or in any way productive. We’re not talking about constructive, heated conversations more akin to a dialogue, we’re talking unnecessary, primary-school-level shit throwing of completely no substance. I’ve immediately stopped reading a couple of blogs that have interested me, after coming across comments sections riddled with people taking pot shots at each other for no discernible reason other than to assert somehow that they’re better/smarter/more knowledgeable than the other person. Why bother engaging in these “my penis is bigger than yours” fests if you’re so sure of yourself?
This may also be a wankerish statement, but I’ve come to realise that almost all the blogs I read have a common sensibility of humanity, not matter what the subject matter. The fashion blogs I’m devoted to for example, are in the main motivated not so much about admiring ‘prettiness’, but about a search for beauty in their own individual senses. Up until this point, any fashion blog that has indulged in a lot of “that’s ugly, how could she have worn that/made that” etc. I’ve eventually let go. Whereas the ones I still read approach looking at things that don’t appeal to them largely in terms of “I’m not interested in that”, which is a completely different statement. What the latter sentiment conveys is a continual search for their own inspiration(s); for a celebration of the things they admire, NOT about imposing a universal statement of ‘good taste’. It’s why I’ve kind of fallen in love with Queen Michelle from Kingdom of Style, who I’d categorize as being one who takes inspiration from different sources and uses that to inform her sartorial choices in really interesting ways- I have a bit of a fangirl attachment to her…
With the exception of the blogs I read for informative/news purposes I guess I keep going back to them because on some level they inspire me. The commonality to that inspiration is generally, even in their snarkiest, grossest incarnations, essentially about what it means to be a ‘good’ person, in the sense of someone who thinks, who creates, who refuses to merely accept the world as it is, unquestioningly. Anyone whose motivation is to merely hate for the sake of hating is not going to be read by me. I’m far too romantic about all this stuff- clearly, I’m only about the love people.
Speaking of good blogs though, you should check out Random Vandal, it doesn’t update often, but it is still worth visiting regularly.
Finally, in regards to the Interpol/Joy Division stuff I wrote about a couple of posts ago- I re-came across something I’d read ages ago on the matter by John Darnielle (of The Mountain Goats), which might interest you, if you know, you’re Hayley: 101 things to which you can compare Interpol besides Joy Division

“I re-came”
That sounds so incredibly hot for some reason.

Jennifer! I was going to write a post on Marie Antoinette and the girly Coppola! The intention was etched upon my blog’s flimsy walls. IS THIS IDEA THIEVERY I SPY? *overcome with imitation-is-the-sincerest-form-of flattery* We should time it so our musings are released into the internet at the same time so that we may have a flailing circus of conjoined critique. That would be fabulous, y/y?
But yes, onto seriousness, blog drama is truly frightening and one reason why I’m grateful my blog is so far only regularly visited by dear friends and equally dear clever, amusing strangers. In the case of stalkers and trolls, the only thing that can be done is to ignore and wait till they get bored and leave. The internet is for love and lols and community-building (and porn), and it’s depressing that the same facilities that help the internet be so awesome are the same things that can be used to make dirty, childish war. Long live those romantic, questioning blogs we hold so dear, and down with the trolls into bloggish perdition.
Obligatory squee: MOUNTAIN GOATS! *bouncing with lovelovelove*

I’m pretty sure, I can say with reasonable confidence, that my penis is, in fact, bigger than your’s.
Scummy // October 2, 2007 at 9:10 pm |
and my english is considerably worse.
Jobe // October 2, 2007 at 9:59 pm |
You still speak it quite well. Have you been learning it for long.

Jobe, there you go inspiring me again…
Hayley, you’re really loving calling me ‘Jennifer’ aren’t you?
1) thievery, a bit, yes
2) flattery, double yes
3) unleashing our opinions on MA simultaneously, triple yes
Scum, your first comment made me laugh for a couple of minutes, but then I was disturbed by your terrible English and I could no longer laugh: what if, in fact, that stray apostrophe was a sign your penis is actually non-existent?
Bad comment grammar and punctuation is a terrible affliction- dear god I hope you overcome it. I’m praying for you.
Jobe, the same goes for you, where is your question mark????

I could have sworn it was there last night…

Yes the blog drama is tedious. I seem to find myself tangled in it quite a lot but I can assure you I’ve never once started any drama nor gone looking for it.
First it was TSSH and their cronies, then some other Aussie h8torators, and now the beeyotch who thinks I’m hacking her.
It’s quite exhausting.

The Smiths!
Ooo!
*bounces*

Jen: I’m glad you laughed. I’ve been twitching wildly. The inability to edit or delete comments is extremely intimidating. The idea of an unalterable spelling/grammar mistake is unbearable. It’s a mirror that only reflects my flaws.
Jobe: 6-7 months.
Steph: Hey! It’s rude to point!
p.s. Comment sections are so awesome for mingling! Party at Jobe’s blog Saturday night!
N.B. After proof reading this post 6-8 times I’m fairly sure it’s safe to post.

Blog party! Woooo!
I’m bringing potato salad and cat macros.
jen // October 5, 2007 at 12:14 pm |
Steph, I’m just disturbed that this mysterious TSSH even has cronies- I just don’t understand, my brain is not equipped for this kind of shit…
Jobe, I’m glad you’re sharing in Smiths love to the extent of bouncing
Scum, since I do happen to have editing power over your comments, I’m now tempted to play around with yours to fuck with you…
Hayley, cat macros: ?? Please enlighten me oh knowledgeable one
Hayley // October 5, 2007 at 11:42 pm |
Hehe, macro is simply a technical term for any photo-manip that tend to be prefixed with ‘lol’ – in this case lolcats (although I spent a lot of yesterday awed/aghast at the discovery that the lol phenomena has hit several fandoms. I have now seen far too many lolpotters and loldoctors than is good for any one brain to contain).
Jobe // October 6, 2007 at 12:35 am |
lolbots is a good one.
Scummy // October 6, 2007 at 12:40 am |

that movie could have been so good
the cast wasn’t bad
the costumes were beautiful
and they shot the film in the most beautiful locations
but the script sucked
the dialogue sucked
and nothing happened
it ended in the middle
it made me sad
the soundtrack really didn’t work
